A Lesson in Not Wasting Time, By David Potthast
Comments of ‘no time’ or ‘can’t spare any time’ come from the commotion surrounding a man who stands as a stone sits in a rushing creek. The difference is, he is not worn away as the stone would be. He is solid, stable, firm and formidable. He has time, even time to spare and he spends it as he wishes; sometimes giving it away freely; which is why he is on this low, dirty street.
Â
Packed with people pursuing their personal priorities, the crowd around him rushes about. Not agitated or aggressive to him either, as they do not notice this person in their way. When an individual comes up to him, it is as if this man is not there, or in the guise of a beggar. This causes the punctual person to rush around, not making eye contact and mumbling something about no spare time or that he or she is just out of time. These people, all these people, on this low street have this problem, and work to make more time for themselves. This is why they rush about. In their rushing however, they do not realize that they are using more time than if one were to proceed patiently as well as punctually.
