A Lesson in Not Wasting Time, By David Potthast

A Lesson in Not Wasting Time, By David Potthast

Comments of ‘no time’ or ‘can’t spare any time’ come from the commotion surrounding a man who stands as a stone sits in a rushing creek. The difference is, he is not worn away as the stone would be. He is solid, stable, firm and formidable. He has time, even time to spare and he spends it as he wishes; sometimes giving it away freely; which is why he is on this low, dirty street.

Packed with people pursuing their personal priorities, the crowd around him rushes about. Not agitated or aggressive to him either, as they do not notice this person in their way. When an individual comes up to him, it is as if this man is not there, or in the guise of a beggar. This causes the punctual person to rush around, not making eye contact and mumbling something about no spare time or that he or she is just out of time. These people, all these people, on this low street have this problem, and work to make more time for themselves. This is why they rush about. In their rushing however, they do not realize that they are using more time than if one were to proceed patiently as well as punctually.

The Building of Planets

05 | January | 2009

How was this 'made'

With much respect/apologies to TS Elliot's the Naming of Cats

The building of planets is a difficult matter,

This isn’t just one of your holiday games;

at first you’ll think i’m as mad as a hatter

When I tell you, a planet may be built 3 different ways.

First of all, there’s the way the univesre uses daily.

With orbits, gravity, heat, or sun rays,

With vectors or worm holes, or comets like Hailey-

All of them sensible everyday ways.

There are fancier ways, if you think them more sound,

Some for gods, some that take 7 days:

Such as dividing light and dark,  sea and ground-

All of them sensible, everyday ways.

But a planet can be built in a way that’s particular,

A way that’s peculiar and more dignified,

Else how can the artist keep his craft curricular,

Or attain his idea, and cherish his pride?

In ways of this kind, I can give you a quorum,

With gadgets, gizmos, or tools for this list,

With concepts, visions, and above all decorum-

Ways that never belong to more than one artist.

But above and beyond there’s one way left over,

And that is the way you never will guess;

The way that no science can ever discover-

But the artist does know, and will never confess.

When you notice the artist in profound meditation,

The reason I tell you, is always the same:

His mind is engaged in rapt contemplation

of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of HIS way:

His  ineffable effable

undeniably serene

Deep and inscrutable singular way.

Know where this story goes

Know where this story goes

I had only a few moments to spy the woman on the baroque side of the hall. She had dark hair, a fit figure, and wore grayish garments with a black waist coat. It was similar to my clothing, but of a modern, streamlined victorian nature. This was all I saw, because a rush of wind blasted through the entire hallway, and just as we entered the hall and faced each other. Following that came a thin wall that split the already visually segregated path. Mystified I approached this wall in disbelief, and found the humidity rising uncomfortably. The wall is made of steam condensed to a thing opaque film. Disbelief again floods through me, but this time with mounting suspicion. I reach out. I touch the wall. My lower body heat clears the area where my hand touches, like a defrost system in the time I was just snatched from. (more…)
