Know where this story goes

Know where this story goes

I had intended to write out the woman’s perspective of her story to the point where she and the man meet, but I just can’t seem to wrap my head around a women’s perspective (big surprise).  It’s not only that, but I also would like to write it in the second person.  I’m not sure why, but it seems fitting given the odd premises this story line has taken on. The idea of starting in the first person, moving through the second, and on to the third strikes me as interesting. I’ve since resolved to continue the story in the third person and leaving this bizarre ’second person, female’ alone until I have her whole story worked out. I’m trying to treat each character equally, so I know I need at least three stories for the woman’s character. Until I can do that, I’ll continue this crazy story in the third person as intended. The third person perspective will combine the man and the woman’s story as they partner together for more science fiction and surreal antics.

A Lesson in Not Wasting Time, By David Potthast

A Lesson in Not Wasting Time, By David Potthast

Comments of ‘no time’ or ‘can’t spare any time’ come from the commotion surrounding a man who stands as a stone sits in a rushing creek. The difference is, he is not worn away as the stone would be. He is solid, stable, firm and formidable. He has time, even time to spare and he spends it as he wishes; sometimes giving it away freely; which is why he is on this low, dirty street.

Packed with people pursuing their personal priorities, the crowd around him rushes about. Not agitated or aggressive to him either, as they do not notice this person in their way. When an individual comes up to him, it is as if this man is not there, or in the guise of a beggar. This causes the punctual person to rush around, not making eye contact and mumbling something about no spare time or that he or she is just out of time. These people, all these people, on this low street have this problem, and work to make more time for themselves. This is why they rush about. In their rushing however, they do not realize that they are using more time than if one were to proceed patiently as well as punctually.

Technology Extends the Alien Hand of Friendship

Technology Extends the Alien Hand of Friendship

There have been many takes on the trend of aesthetic known as ‘Steam-punk’ with it’s victorian, and sometimes baroque , features dominating the design of a device. What must not be forgotten is also the emphasis on the mechanical. In terms of defining ‘Steam-punk’we can look to the establishment of ‘Cyberpunk’ in the early ‘80s by William Gibson , amongst others. Both describe a mish-mash of technological/mechanical aesthetic that is colliding with human sensibilities of beauty at about 100 or so miles per hour. The result of which is high technologic functionality based on truly mechanical means, or sophisticated processing hidden as magic beneath the surface of ornate design. In this  video, one of my primary examples in teaching graphic design, we see the proprietor of the presses notate that the original designers of early presses thought of machines in organic terms.
