Is / Is Not

Is / Is NotAlong the lines of patterns, emergent patterns, and emergent meanings in said patterns, I’m thinking a lot about the relevance of existence in binary language. Taken to an extreme, the on and off of binary is fundamentally a question of being and non-being. ASCII binary, or perhaps any binary system, can then be interpreted as a pattern of existence and non-existence. The combinations of being and not-being then serve to better define existence. Poppycock? Balderdash? Probably. Anyway here’s a simple study: a large sketch of a tiny brushed steel cylinder (is), and a copper sphere (is not).

Face of Time – C’est Fini

Fot Triangle Front Fot Triangle Back FoT Triangle Inside

Probably the most intensive project I’ve come up with outside of steel work, I’m calling the Face of Time complete. All the creative work is finished, anything else that comes along will be for displaying or archiving purposes. I’m contemplating whether to keep it O’Naturale, or seal it with a spray.

On one side, amassed together, the 33 pieces show a gigantic face. The back shows a unique pattern, but while displayed all at once form a lock-step alternating pattern. Each back is also marked with a single binary set that when—again when seen together—is an encoded message different from the big one painted on on the front.

Being the person that I am, I realized that viewing the pieces, individually or all together, side-long may be an experience in itself. To keep that from being uninteresting, there is some decorative paper and a more formal layout with a white stripe and a black block. Each of these is more or less unique, but some are done with the same paper to aid in reordering them.

And now for something completely different…

Face of Time – Triangles

Fot - Triangle 1 FoT - Triangle 2 Fot - Triangle 3

These are some shots of the FoT’s tirangular boxes assembled, all still very rough on the edges. I don’t mind sharing that it was very difficult to cut up these individual panels. I was quite happy with the FoT as one solid piece, but ‘needs must as the devil drives’. I had to decide which would be more precious: the individual pieces, or just a big, somewhat flat collages. And besides…I have a killer way of displaying it, though I do need to come up with the scratch for it.

After a few frustrations with the website itself, I think I finally got all these thumbnail images sussed (sp?). There had been a problem with them not creating their own page when in the design when one clicked on them. After upgrading the wordpress system kajigger, I had to reformat the templatemabob because the netsol directions were unclear, quote: ‘Upgrading will cause altered files to be rewritten, all templates will remain intact.’ So I thought: ‘Ok, the stylesheet won’t be affected, just the .php files’ Boy was I wrong. As for the thumbnail solution, I’m not sure if that helped. I’m not entirely sure how this error is being caused, oh well.

As I expalin this work to people in private conversation, I realize I’m putting a lot into it. There is a tremendous amount of thought/concept/idea here that stretches beyond the ’seen’. It’s a goal to engage the viewer in a world of interconnection and enigma. Hope it goes well.
