Robotic Educator

chalkboardSo I thought of another unholy union, this time for an assignment. For an internship seminar we are to begin by defining the ideals we would like see in an educator. Characteristics that define a good educator, so to speak. Oddly, what came to my mind are the laws of robotics by Isaac Asimov. Just as to why these came to mind, I don’t know. There’s something about their directness and stability in referring to one another. I realize that what I’m doing takes a fictional premise and applies it to a a very real and serious situation, so my ‘translations’ into educator characteristics may seem ridiculous. I don’t mean to cheapen an educator by stating them this way, and my focus is mainly on an art educator. Nor do I intend the educator to be an automaton in any sense of the word (or even according to Asimov’s word, for that matter). What I’ve done here is to simply apply my opinions via a literary vehicle that matches my intention. The key here is that the 3 laws of robotics by Asimov are the inspiration for these initial laws. Unlike the robots of Asimov’s fictional worlds, we humans are not strictly confined to just these 3.

The 3 laws are as follows:

Binary Man: The Middle

28 | July | 2011

All wrapped up

no place to go

Trust me, Binary Man is in there… Somewhere. I filmed a little bit of The fine tuning of the figure, but it came out to 47 some odd minutes. I probably won’t post that, as it is mostly musing on what I’m going to do with the statue as opposed to actually doing anything to it.

So far, as of right now, the figure element is complete. I’m not going for a fully detailed figure, just an accurately proportional stance. I am a little leary of the thing, though. It seems that the incrediblly light wire in the armature has a tendency to note be rigid enough. I may be regretting buying armature as opposed to welding one up from scratch. It’s the weight of the polymer clay that concerns me, but I think (read: hope) it will stiffen up once it has time to sit and also during the bake.

Now I just have to wait for my copper tacks to arrive…

Binary Man: The Beginning

Armature and based

It begins

A small statue but big endeavor. As may have been obvious, I do a lot with the representation of binary by using stainless steel staples and copper cut tacks. This statue shall literally be covered in them, and it will translate to something in a paragraph form. Sculpture? Yes. Tedious? Definitely. My emotion is to run straight into this, but that poses problems. One is that the polymer could become brittle when exposed to air too long. I don’t have enough staples and tacks to cover it just yet. Also, the uncertainty of how the copper, steel, aluminum, and polymer will react together when baked. Indeed, I’m reminded that as a child I wanted to walk before I could crawl.
